A BUTCHER’S hook/look (Cockney rhyming slang)
side view - it’s how you look at it
Those of you who followed my instagram posts on gallery shows I liked, might recognize that I would present my own work straight on whereas work of others slightly from the side. My logic for this was that when an artist looks at a piece, they always check the sides, what’s it on, how is it made - more of an examination. That’s the way I look.

The difference in how work looks from one side or the other often provides an eye opening slant - it can change everything. Here, I really like how things are thrown out on the ‘non-logical’ view from the left, actually adding another dimension.
re-visiting
For my revisit series, I etched a rectangular area into museum glass - an ultra-clear, non-reflective surface. This section now appears to float above the image beneath, partially obscuring it and distancing the viewer. The slim border around the etched area provides a glimpse of a little more detail, but never enough to fully reveal the complete scene - just enough context to evoke personal associations.
Whether the setting is a beach or at the pool, the scene feels familiar - an indistinct yet intimate space that prompts half-memories to surface, blurring the generic and the deeply personal.

meanwhile
El Diabolito, a favorite taco spot on 3rd St, had a papered ‘mural’ that was pretty fabulous. Obviously the width of the wall to be covered was a lot wider than the original image file, so they just stretched the print horizontally to fit! Of course the characters, buildings, cat, mule and chickens, all being a bit wider than normal didn’t matter to the ambience and most probably wasn’t even noticed by customers.

Thinking of Holbein’s ‘Ambassadors’ with the anamorphosis skull that can only be seen from an acute angle or mirror tube, I thought there has to be a sweet spot for the Mexican mural scene and there is…. very nearly
open wide
this piece by Ching Ho demonstrates really well how ‘side-viewing’ alters appreciation
