What the hell am I doing here?! Not in the photo (I'll get to that in a bit) but on Substack. I have spent my life ‘image based', I'm not a writer, I'm not writing a book and I prefer to read than write but I’m always looking and happy to share observations - could be interesting. We will see.
I can say I am fairly addicted to 'show and tell' - can't help myself, sorry! There are plenty of photos of me as a kid where I am holding up something to show the camera.
Detective instinct
When I see a photo, curiosity gets the better of me and I’ll start researching what I can find out - so first I asked my brother where we used to go to when I was a kid and he came back with a couple of suggestions. Looking around online I find Kimmeridge Bay Beach with Clavel Tower (1830) in the background. It’s on the Dorset coast, now referred to as the Jurassic Coast (England’s only natural World Heritage Site)
Next: the seaweed/kelp - I found help and confirmation from Jessica in England who has a nature blog and is really up on kelp (natureinfocus.blog). It’s called Furbellows (Saccorhiza polyschides) but you didn’t need to know that. However if you want to see some pretty crazy alien looking stuff, look it up!
Then: I remember the sweater was a favorite and I’d call it my ‘sandwich spread jumper’ because of the color flecks and I really liked Sandwich Spread! (I don’t think it’s as big in the US - and maybe not anymore in England, who knows)

3 in a row
For the last three years I have kept 2 Instagram sites going - one is for Art, my own and that of others in shows I like; the second is an organized presentation of my photos, mostly New York, past and present. Now that I have 500+ posts I would like to move off that platform and present them here. From the beginning I wanted to structure my Instagram page - it’s been a challenging but rewarding constraint to sequence these photos in threes with each trio linked to the next. It’s an angle, a subject, a color, something that links from one to the next. It’s only the people who look on a desktop that maybe see the connection, but the flow will be there.

ahead
There are a number of projects I’m working on…. that are all a bit stalled. I’m thinking that committing myself to do this, it’ll prompt me to get moving!
Projects - In my mind I have 2 different photo books, one completed booklet that needs to be marketed, one possible film screenplay.
Subjects - what's going on? what am I doing? (openings, trips etc)
Art Round - notes on my work and continuing my highlights of galleries & museums - I’m starting with more photo/NYC history - there will be more on the art later.
Local focus - what I see, stuff I have and what I want to share
Let’s see where the road goes - hang in there! why not subscribe?
Point of View – A phrase referencing the video gaming world that echoes a previous notion of ‘playing’. Matchbox cars from my childhood, combined with generic road postcards, provide a multi dimensional view into both a past as well as a future.
So amazing that you are recognizable in your kid-on-the-beach photo. I am enjoying your playful work!
Bravo, Steve! Amazing to see this new evolution happen - what a treat.
